    Question:

Thater… sounds like a messed up tip…could be slightly bent..so when the paint as you say initially…is okay after cleaning…then as you paint it builds up…because it’s not atomizing right and flying out of the tip correctly…so it builds there…until after awhile it has to fly off…and there’s your splatter. What do you think? Try…maybe a new needle and a new nozzle. Try it..theyr’e cheap enough Aloha Vern – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Organization: Posted via Supernews, http://www.supernews.com Newsgroups: alt.airbrush.art My Badger 150 splatters like a bastard and the paint does not flow consistantly.  I havent used it in a long time.  I am fairly certain that I am not missing any parts.  I dissassembled and compared to parts list.  I is clean.  One thing that I noticed :  When I paint for a bit, the paint seems to build up on the end of the airbrush, then it blows the paint off in a splatter.  Is this airbrush just a crappy model.  Any ideas welcome. Thanks.

Your paint may be too thick. The thinner the better really. Also I use a very soft brush and dip it in cleaning fluid and gently clean the end of the needle to remove build up. I do this without removing the needle, just in between coats of paint. I then retract the needle and use a bit of tissue to soak up any fluid in the air cap otherwise you will blast it all over your work. Mind you this may be the effect you are after. I’ve heard of bleach being sprayed before to lighten a color. Paul. — The Pinup Art of Paul Corfield      www.paulcorfield.com

I am but a newbie myself, but from what I’ve read the spattering can be either a messed up tip, or air pressure too low. Again, don’t take this as gospel, but I’ve read a TON this week!! lol Clemson – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -My Badger 150 splatters like a bastard and the paint does not flow consistantly. You didn’t mention what type of paint you are using but if it is acrylic paints, they will have a tendency to build in the nozzle/tip and cause spatter.  This is an inherent "problem" with acrylics.  It is also something that many if not most airbrush manufacturers are aware of and they have developed special tips for airbrushing acrylics. Solvent based paints will rarely build up in the tip unless they are not thinned properly. To alleviate the build up problem with your Badger 150, use the Badger "crown regulator" tip. Even if using this tip, you will want to get into the habit of periodically cleaning the nozzle with a Q-tip when painting with acrylics. A picture of the crown regulator tip is shown towards the bottom of the following web page: http://www.badger-airbrush.com/access2.htm Is this (Badger 150) airbrush just a crappy model.

This is a double action airbrush and there are better and much worse but Badger mfgrs. quality airbrushes IMO. Mark

Thater, I’ve got three Badger 150’s and they are a well made airbrush.  One I’ve had for about 12 years.  They are designed more towards illustration type of work, but I have used them for automotive, T-shirts and fingernail painting without any trouble. Without knowing what type of paint you are using this is just a guess.  The spattering you are having a problem with is from paint drying on the end of the needle.  With acrylic paint like createx it is a common problem.  I usually keep some airbrush cleaner in a squirt bottle and clean the tip frequently with a cotton ball soaked in it.  If you leave the crown cap just finger tight you can spin it off and pinch the paint off with your fingers. The other problem that i can think of is your needle/cap assembly.  It needs to match the viscosity of the paint you are using.  i.e.: fine for water colors and inks or reduced acrylics.  Medium for acrylics and thinned enamels, And Heavy for thicker materials.  It is also a good idea to strain your paint through some cheese cloth or a paint strainer every once in awhile, the little bits of dried paint can cause all sorts of grief.  If you think that your needle is bent, pull your needle and lay it on a clean piece of paper and roll it, you can tell really easily if it is bent.  If it is just the tip, press down on it with the tip of you finger while rolling it.  This will usually straighten it enough to work with it.
