Air Brushing – Air Brush » Airbrush Art » latest painting

    Question:

Thanks for the comments Paul,  I tried to create a soft ‘Vargas’ type feel to this one and keep it quite simple. I hear what your saying with regards to the colour variations in the skin tones, I sometimes paint with conventional brushes and do use the warms and cools etc, etc, mainly because with conventional brushes the colours are much quicker to change and apply. When it comes to airbrush art though I do tend to get a bit lazy with the colours … Poor practise I know but I also like to start and finish a piece in one sitting if possible and always take the shortest route to the finished article.(I see the finished painting in my mind and then race to the finish line.)   I reckon I’m improving now on every piece and I’m also gone from using golden acrylics to the fw acrylic inks (these paints are excellent.) Thanks again for your comments, appreciated as always. Wenz

The first thing that struck me was that her skin tones looked the same colour all over which you don’t see in real life. It’s an easy mistake to make and one that I did myself on many occasions. I tend to spray my whole skin tones in one flat very pale pink. This is generally a mix of about 5 drops of white, 1 drop of yellow and  4 drops of process magenta. These are FW ink colours and FW magenta is quite transparent and not as intense as other brands of magenta. I spray the whole painting one flat colour. Then I erase in using various rubbers all the main highlights bringing out the white of the board. With this base colour still in my airbrush I may add in varying amounts blue, burnt umber, purple and black for shadow areas. Around the cheeks, hands and soles of the feet I will use a quite diluted mix of magenta with a little burnt umber added for the hands and feet. It’s amazing the colours you can add to skin tones and they will still look natural. The main thing is it will add more life to your work. Get your self a book on painting people, one that shows combinations of colours to use for highlights and shadows. A general mix is warm highlights, cool shadows and cool highlights, warm shadows. Anatomically the model looked ok. I would have made her right shin a little straighter but apart from that it’s ok. Hope I haven’t gone on too long but this is just an insight into how I handle my pinups. Build up plenty of layers is the key. You could still do it in a day. My Barbie painting was done in about two and a half days. Not working flat out and I have a TV in my garage which distracts me quite a lot. I could have done it in a day and a half probably.
